Best AI tutors for kids and teens in 2026
Most tools that turn up as AI tutors are doing a different job. Khanmigo sits on Khan Academy’s library. Photomath photographs a problem. Quizlet drills flashcards. ChatGPT will answer almost any prompt. Aristotle is a voice AI tutor built for middle and high school students, and open to anyone who wants to learn. It talks with the student on a shared whiteboard and asks questions instead of handing over the answer.
Intro is three free one-hour sessions. Scholar is $49 a month for eight sessions. Infinite is $199 a month unlimited, across subjects.
How do the main options compare?
Prices and ages below are from each vendor’s public site. Quizlet Plus and Duolingo Max do not publish a single public dollar amount on the marketing site, so those cells stay qualitative.

When is Khanmigo the better fit?
Khanmigo is Khan Academy’s AI tutor. If your child already does Khan math every week, or the district paid for seats, that library is a real advantage. The tutor already knows the video, the exercise, and the classroom account.
Families can also start without a school. The parent plan is $4 a month or $44 a year and can cover up to ten children under 18. Teachers get Khanmigo free. Classroom student seats still go through a school or district.
It is a weaker fit if you want a live voice session on a shared whiteboard, or work that is not in Khan. Aristotle vs Khanmigo goes through that split.
What is Aristotle?
Aristotle is a voice-first Socratic AI tutor. The student talks through a problem. Aristotle listens, draws on a shared whiteboard, and asks the next question instead of finishing the worksheet. Read how Aristotle tutors or the published plans.
It is built for middle and high school students, and open to anyone who wants to learn, across math, science, English, history, languages, AP, IB, and SAT/ACT prep. Parents get a summary after each session.
Is Synthesis Tutor an alternative for older students?
No. Synthesis Tutor is a 1:1 AI math tutor for younger kids. The public site says ages 5–11 and K–5 math, with spoken guidance and progress reports. The family cards on synthesis.com/tutor show $29 a month or $119 a year for up to seven children, with a seven-day trial.
If you have an elementary student who needs math, look there. It is not a voice tutor across subjects for middle and high school.
What about Quizlet, Photomath, Duolingo, and ChatGPT?
Quizlet is a study app: flashcards, practice tests, and AI explanations. It helps a student remember terms. It does not sit with them and ask why a step is wrong. Plus is a paid upgrade. Quizlet does not publish one public price on the marketing site.
Photomath photographs a problem and shows the steps. That is useful when you are stuck on one equation. The student does not have to explain anything. Basic is free. Plus is $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year on photomath.com. The site says elementary through college.
Duolingo Max adds AI Roleplay and Video Call to Duolingo. It is a language app, not a math, science, or SAT tutor. Max is sold in the iOS and Android app. Duolingo does not publish a single public price on the website.
ChatGPT will answer almost any homework prompt. Study mode tries to slow that down by asking the student to think before it continues. It is still a general chatbot: not built around a parent dashboard, and easy to switch back to ordinary chat. Study mode is on the free plan. Plus is $20 a month.
Which one should you start with?
Start with Khanmigo if Khan Academy is already the homework, whether the school paid or you take the $4 family plan. Start with Synthesis Tutor for elementary math. Use Photomath when you only need a camera on one equation. Use Quizlet for flashcards. Use Duolingo Max for languages. Use ChatGPT study mode if an older student already lives in ChatGPT and you accept a general chatbot.
Start with Aristotle if you want a middle or high school student — or anyone who wants to learn — to talk through the work on a whiteboard, across subjects, without being handed the answer. The three free sessions are how most families try that.
